How to verify promo code eligibility and checkout totals

Verification should prove both the decision and the amount: eligible codes apply once, ineligible codes explain themselves, and checkout never leaves a misleading discount or total. Test the transitions that caused the report, not only a clean first submission. Record the rejection states.

Check whether the outcome improved

  1. Exercise the rule matrix

Test valid, malformed, expired, ineligible product, minimum amount, quantity threshold, and stacking cases. Assert the message, code state, discount line, and total for each. Use fixed fixtures and record the promotion rule version or date used by the test.

  2. Repeat state transitions

Apply, remove, replace, and reapply a code after editing quantity, shipping, or address inputs. Refresh and revisit the step. Confirm stale responses cannot restore a previous discount and that a failed validation leaves the last truthful total visible.

  3. Check order records

Complete safe eligible and ineligible paths. Compare the order discount and total with the final checkout summary. Verify an interrupted or rejected order does not retain a promotion that can affect a later cart or appear in a duplicate attempt.

What to carry forward

Accept when the rule matrix produces one predictable message and amount per case, including state changes and persistence. Mark any campaign or locale not represented in fixtures as unverified and attach its owner before closing the work.

Keep the decision with the work.

Use a Work Item in Aglet to record the problem, the evidence you have, and the next decision. Add an owner and priority, then keep updates in the discussion so the next person can follow the reasoning.
