Triage an Inconclusive Agent Result

An inconclusive result can be the correct outcome when available evidence cannot distinguish the options. Triage should define the decision, list competing explanations, classify evidence limits, and state what a useful next observation would be. Separate a true boundary from an incomplete investigation.

Establish what is happening

  1. State the unresolved question

Rewrite the result as a specific question with alternatives, decision owner, time window, and evidence standard. Mark which claims are supported, which are plausible, and which cannot be evaluated. Avoid replacing an unanswered question with a generic request for more data.

  2. Classify evidence limits

Inventory missing, stale, contradictory, noisy, inaccessible, or non-discriminating artifacts with source and timing. Identify whether the evidence fails to cover the population, measure the outcome, or separate hypotheses. Preserve examples that show why the current result cannot conclude.

  3. Bound the next observation

Name the smallest source, comparison, fixture, or owner decision that could change the result, plus its expected effect. Set a stopping condition for another attempt and record valid interim guidance. Keep unsupported alternatives visible rather than selecting one by tone.

What to carry forward

Return an inconclusive-result brief with decision, alternatives, evidence classes, supported claims, missing observation, owner, and stopping condition. Triage is complete when uncertainty is specific and actionable. Keep the result open when no bounded observation could distinguish the competing explanations.

Keep the decision with the work.

Use a Work Item in Aglet to record the problem, the evidence you have, and the next decision. Add an owner and priority, then keep updates in the discussion so the next person can follow the reasoning.
