Triage responsive overflow in a required workflow

Responsive defects become product defects when content or actions fall outside the user’s working area. Start with the narrow workflow and identify whether the problem comes from fixed width, long content, controls, tables, navigation, or an accidental horizontal scroll.

Establish what is happening

  1. Record the viewport

Capture width, height, zoom, device or browser, orientation, and page state. Note whether the viewport is narrow because of a phone, split window, zoom, or embedded surface.

  2. Find the overflow boundary

Identify the element extending beyond the viewport, its minimum width, long text, control group, table, or sticky region. Record whether content is clipped, overlapped, horizontally scrollable, or simply hard to reach.

  3. Bound the blocked task

Describe the action, information, or navigation users cannot see or operate. Separate decorative overflow from a required field, submit action, status, or record identity that is effectively hidden.

What to carry forward

Triage should state viewport, overflow element, content condition, blocked task, and evidence gaps. Escalate when users cannot complete or understand a required path; otherwise record a bounded layout quality issue. Record the narrow viewport and content fixture, then identify the first required control, status, label, or navigation target that becomes clipped, overlapped, or unreachable.

Keep the decision with the work.

Use a Work Item in Aglet to record the problem, the evidence you have, and the next decision. Add an owner and priority, then keep updates in the discussion so the next person can follow the reasoning.
