Prioritize Research Themes for Product Decisions

Themes should help a team decide what to explore or change, not merely make notes look organized. Prioritize patterns that affect important outcomes or expose a gap between user groups. Keep weak but potentially consequential themes visible beside well-supported minor patterns.

Decide where the work belongs

  1. Compare consequence

Describe the outcome affected by each theme, including access, delay, confusion, workaround, or trust. Identify who experiences it and at which stage. Avoid ranking a theme high because it has a memorable phrase instead of a meaningful consequence.

  2. Assess support and conflict

Count supporting observations by source and context, then record counterexamples and disagreements. A broad theme with shallow support may be less useful than a narrower pattern with clear evidence. Note what additional observation would change the order.

  3. Choose a decision path

Select a theme for solution exploration, another research round, a split by segment, or a deliberate deferment. Assign an owner, evidence request, and review date. Keep related themes linked without merging different outcomes.

What to carry forward

The priority output is an ordered theme queue showing consequence, evidence coverage, conflict, and next decision. Start with the pattern that could change scope or exclude a group. Preserve low-confidence themes when their potential consequence is high.

Keep the decision with the work.

Use a Work Item in Aglet to record the problem, the evidence you have, and the next decision. Add an owner and priority, then keep updates in the discussion so the next person can follow the reasoning.
