Prioritize Prototype Tasks for Learning Value

A study can waste time on tasks that demonstrate a happy path but answer no important question. Prioritize tasks that expose a risky interaction, a recovery moment, or a meaningful user outcome. Keep task diversity purposeful rather than expanding the script for its own sake.

Decide where the work belongs

  1. Rank the product questions

    List the decision each candidate task could inform and the behavior needed to answer it. Give weight to tasks that reveal whether the concept works for first-time or assisted users. Defer tasks whose outcomes would not change a design choice.

  2. Compare task realism

    Review scenario plausibility, prototype fidelity, participant context, time, and facilitation burden. A short task with an artificial setup may be less useful than a longer task grounded in a recent user episode. Record the tradeoff.

  3. Choose a compact script

    Select the tasks, order, pilot owner, and review date. Keep a recovery or edge task if it can expose a serious barrier. Defer cosmetic checks until the core journey can be completed without hints.

What to carry forward

The priority output is a compact task queue tied to decisions, user context, realism, and pilot conditions. Start with the task that could change the design direction. Keep lower-priority tasks available when a pilot reveals an unexpected interaction.
