How to triage profile completion friction for a clear scope

Profile friction may come from a blocking rule, unclear field meaning, an unsaved response, or an optional task presented as required. Triage the actual form state with a synthetic account, recording fields, validation, focus, save result, and next action. Keep identity and authorization behavior within their existing boundaries.

Establish what is happening

  1. Inventory the fields

List visible fields, required markers, examples, defaults, and any role-specific differences using a synthetic account. Note whether a field is empty, invalid, or optional when the form opens. Do not put personal profile values or credentials into screenshots or reports.

  2. Exercise save states

Submit a valid profile, a missing required field, an invalid value, and a partial optional profile. Record inline messages, focus, redirect, persisted values, and the action offered next. Refresh after each attempt to distinguish a stale display from a failed save.

  3. Observe completion decisions

Mark whether the person can skip optional details, return later, and reach workspace or project setup. Compare owner and restricted-role variants when available. Record unclear wording separately from a validation defect so the correct owner receives the finding.

What to carry forward

Triage is complete when each field’s required state, validation result, persistence, and next action are known for a synthetic profile. If an optional path is not supported by the current form, record that as a product boundary rather than implying a missing save.

Keep the decision with the work.

Use a Work Item in Aglet to record the problem, the evidence you have, and the next decision. Add an owner and priority, then keep updates in the discussion so the next person can follow the reasoning.
