Prioritize notification defaults with a trust boundary

Default work matters when a new person receives attention before understanding why or cannot recover from a choice. Compare optional updates with events tied to an action already requested. A contextual explanation or delayed prompt may be safer than enabling every category at once.

Decide where the work belongs

  1. Name the first-use consequence

Describe what the default enables and what interruption or missed update can follow. Compare invited members, new accounts, and returning users. Keep platform permission timing separate from the product’s own event choice.

  2. Compare default options

Set off, on for one relevant category, explicit opt-in, contextual prompt, and later settings beside one another. Consider reversibility and clarity. Prefer a choice that lets a person understand value before they decide about broader updates.

  3. Choose a bounded change

Record event category, context, owner, and revisit evidence. Decide whether to change copy, timing, default scope, or recovery. Preserve the current and no-choice paths so the queue decision can be evaluated honestly.

What to carry forward

Prioritize default changes where an early choice creates an avoidable interruption or hides why notifications matter. The decision should name context and reversal path. If a default is contextual and reversible, queue the specific copy or delivery gap instead of broadening scope.

Keep the decision with the work.

Use a Work Item in Aglet to record the problem, the evidence you have, and the next decision. Add an owner and priority, then keep updates in the discussion so the next person can follow the reasoning.
