Triage duplicated work items without losing findings

Duplicate work is not always waste; independent investigation can increase confidence when the question is high risk. Triage should establish whether work pursues the same outcome under the same conditions and preserve distinct findings before consolidation. Overlap should be resolved from work products and outcomes, not from similar titles or team names.

Establish what is happening

  1. Compare intended outcomes

    Place the records side by side with requested outcome, scope, current state, evidence, dependencies, and expected artifact. Shared nouns are insufficient; verify whether the work changes or explains the same customer or system result.

  2. Check meaningful independence

    Identify differences in conditions, method, team authority, or risk that justify parallel work. If both tracks repeat the same check, preserve the strongest evidence and note what independent confirmation is lost by merging.

  3. Choose a consolidation state

    Merge, link, split scope, assign a coordinator, or keep parallel work with a stop condition. Preserve history and evidence references, define the canonical outcome, and name what each contributor does next.

What to carry forward

The output is an overlap decision with shared outcome, meaningful differences, evidence retained, and clear ownership. Stop triage when the records can be consolidated or deliberately separated; do not delete a track merely because its title resembles another.
