Investigate cross-channel duplicates for one underlying problem

Different channels often capture different moments of the same failure, but they may also expose separate causes. Investigation should align comparable evidence, preserve channel differences, and test a shared mechanism before collapsing the reports into one engineering brief. A shared phrase cannot substitute for comparable workflow conditions across the sources.

Build a useful investigation brief

  1. Build a channel comparison

    For each representative report, record actor, workflow state, release, timing, expected result, observed result, and evidence provenance. Highlight fields visible only in one channel and avoid filling those gaps with assumptions.

  2. Test shared and split paths

    Reproduce the common customer outcome under conditions from each channel, then vary the channel-specific trigger or handoff. Record whether results converge, diverge, or remain untestable. Treat a similar phrase as insufficient evidence of a common cause.

  3. Write a scoped brief

    State the mechanism confidence for each channel, the reports explained by one hypothesis, and any branch that needs a separate owner. Include channel caveats and the smallest next experiment that can distinguish the remaining explanations.

What to carry forward

A useful brief identifies which cross-channel observations converge, which split, and why. Stop when one mechanism explains the selected scope or when separate investigations are justified; preserve untested channel differences as uncertainty rather than flattening them into a single cause.
