Verify Chart Axis Scale and Labels

Axis verification tests the visual contract against values a reader might compare. Exercise ordinary, outlier, negative, zero, and rounded-value cases as appropriate. Compare chart rendering with a table or export, inspect labels and units, and preserve intentional log or truncated views with their stated purpose.

Check whether the outcome improved

  1. Define axis assertions

    Write expected unit, domain, scale type, zero treatment, tick values, label precision, and mark ordering for every fixture. State whether outliers extend the domain or receive a separate treatment. A pass requires the chart to reveal enough context for the intended comparison.

  2. Exercise range boundaries

    Run ordinary, outlier, negative, zero, narrow-range, and large-range fixtures through the chart and its companion table. Compare numeric values, rendered positions, ticks, tooltip text, and export values. Include a filter that changes domain so automatic rescaling is observable.

  3. Review the visual claim

    Ask a reviewer to state the comparison supported by the axis and the units attached to it. Preserve raw fixture, filter state, chart revision, and evidence. Record a bounded outcome when the chart is analytically correct but its scale or purpose requires nearby explanatory text.

What to carry forward

Verification passes when values, domains, scales, ticks, units, and visual explanation agree across reviewed cases. Report a bounded pass for uncovered scale modes. Keep verification inconclusive when clipping, zero treatment, or unit labels could lead a reader to a different conclusion.
