Investigate Chart Axis Interpretation

An axis investigation reconstructs a chart from a fixed value set containing ordinary values, an outlier, a negative, and zero where relevant. Compare numeric data with rendered coordinates and labels. The brief should distinguish a scale configuration, unit conversion, rounding, and a question the chart never clearly stated.

Build a useful investigation brief

  1. Freeze the value fixture

    Record the filtered rows, aggregated values, units, expected domain, zero policy, scale type, and intended comparison. Include values close together and one far value. Preserve the chart revision and filter state so the same data is rendered during each comparison.

  2. Rebuild the visual path

    Capture aggregate output, domain minimum and maximum, scale mapping, tick values, label text, mark positions, and tooltip formatting. Compare raw differences with visual distances. Identify the first stage that clips, transforms, rounds, or relabels a value in a way the chart does not explain.

  3. Test a single axis change

    Rerun the same fixture with one domain, scale, tick, or unit choice changed. Compare reader conclusions across chart, table, card, and export. Treat a dispute over zero or log treatment as a policy hypothesis until the chart and metric owners confirm the intended analytical use.

What to carry forward

The investigation is ready when the brief names the value fixture, first axis divergence, affected comparison, strongest evidence, and tested alternative. Recommend a scoped scale or labeling correction. Keep the case open when units or analytical purpose remain unowned.
