How to prioritize checkout total mismatch investigations

Prioritizing a cart total mismatch means deciding how quickly to act without inventing conversion or revenue numbers. Separate a confusing display from a wrong charge, then weigh the affected checkout states, the possibility of overcollection or undercollection, and whether a safe presentation or calculation guardrail exists.

Decide where the work belongs

  1. Classify the harm

Put each observation into a queue category: display-only confusion, an order total that differs from review, or a payment amount that cannot be reconciled. A confirmed amount discrepancy deserves more urgency than a single stale label, while both may need customer-facing wording review.

  2. Estimate impact from evidence

Count only the affected test cases, support reports, or sampled records you can substantiate. Record unknown volume separately. Increase urgency when the mismatch affects multiple currencies, high-value carts, or a broad calculation path, but do not turn a hypothesis into an incident count.

  3. Choose a containment

Ask whether checkout can safely show one authoritative total, block an unreconciled payment, or preserve the order for manual review. Prefer a reversible containment with a clear owner and expiry. If no safe containment exists, document that uncertainty in the queue decision.

What to carry forward

Prioritize the mismatch as a payment-integrity issue when observed amounts cannot be reconciled; otherwise queue it as checkout clarity work with evidence of the affected path. Record the chosen owner, containment, and reassessment trigger rather than relying on an unverified impact estimate.

Keep the decision with the work.

Use a Work Item in Aglet to record the problem, the evidence you have, and the next decision. Add an owner and priority, then keep updates in the discussion so the next person can follow the reasoning.
