Identify the decision at risk
Compare a controlled value with the interpretation implied by its label. Record whether the mismatch changes magnitude, comparison, or threshold judgment. Keep demonstrated effects separate from hypothetical decisions, and distinguish a calculation that returns the wrong unit from a correct value whose presentation leaves readers to infer its meaning.
Scope shared measure and surface use
Find which charts, tables, exports, and dashboards reuse the affected measure or formatter. Compare an independently labeled reference. Estimate reach from those uses rather than every report, and note whether several series with different units share an axis or label that makes their relative size appear directly comparable.
Assess clarification and correction effort
Check whether a visible definition or alternative view reliably explains the actual unit. Determine whether a label-only correction is sufficient or the displayed values also require conversion. Include the cost of revisiting shared reports when readers may already have copied a number whose unit was missing or stated incorrectly.
What to carry forward
Record priority with the misleading interpretation, affected measure and surfaces, decision consequence, and available clarification. Assign a trigger for another shared formatter or exported mismatch. Keep the queue decision focused on preserving numeric meaning rather than choosing whichever abbreviation makes the chart look cleaner or more compact.
