Turn Interview Bias Findings Into Better Research

A biased prompt is a process lesson as well as a local flaw. Preserve the exact moment the session became suggestive, how that changed interpretation, and what a facilitator could do instead. Then add a small practice that makes neutral wording and independent observation easier to review before the next round.

Keep the lesson for the next incident

  1. Record the teaching case

    Save the original prompt, participant response, moderator follow-up, and independent contrast. Explain whether the issue affected one finding or the whole study. Include a counterexample where a participant corrected the moderator so the lesson has a useful boundary.

  2. Change preparation

    Add a pilot review, neutral-probe checklist, or observer role to the research plan. Demonstrate the change with a replacement prompt and explain how it avoids naming the answer. Keep the practice lightweight enough that facilitators will use it.

  3. Watch for recurrence

    Set a signal such as repeated feature language in participant answers, identical emotional labels, or frequent moderator explanations. Assign an owner to sample sessions and review the signal after the next round. Reopen the guide when the pattern returns.

What to carry forward

The learning record should connect the biased prompt to its interpretation risk, revised facilitation practice, and recurrence signal. State which findings were retained or narrowed. Treat the lesson as a guide improvement, not a claim that every interview in the round was invalid.
